夜梦

Night Dreams

昨日梦君归
贱妾下鸣机
极知意气薄
不著去时衣
故言如梦里
赖得雁书飞

Last night, I dreamed you came back to me.
For a time, I could only cry out, like a bird.
I really wonder, why was my dream spirit so weak?
I couldn't move, standing there in my travelling clothes.
Then we spoke intimately. That was dream-like.
All could be my fault - this wild goose who only writes of flying.

-- 萧妃

废话

Although her name looks like a concubine rank, it is apparently her pen name: Miserable Imperial Concubine. Or it could be a shortened form of Xiao Shufei (蕭淑妃) who was Emperor Gaozong's favorite concubine until the empress conspired to replace her with Consort Wu. Wu turned out badly for the empress, too. So Consort Xiao and the empress then conspired together against her. This did not work out. Wu convinced the emperor that they were both witches, had them executed, and became empress herself. There's a moral here somewhere.
