浣纱庙

Washing Silk Temple

吴越相谋计策多
浣纱神女已相和
一双笑靥才回面
十万精兵尽倒戈

Wu and Yue many times plotted against each other.
But this temple and her mountain had already made peace.
Their dimpled, smiling faces only now change to concern
As thousands of elite troops completely betray our state.

范蠡功成身隐遁
伍胥谏死国消磨
只今诸暨长江畔
空有青山号苎萝

Fan Li achieved merit by withdrawing from the world.
Wu Xu achieved death by idling away his kingdom.
Only today these hordes have reached the banks of Long River.
It is useless to turn the good life over to coarse grass and vines.

废话

I would say this poem was written in 865 during the Xichuan Mutiny when imperial troops went over to fight for Dali. Yu Xuanji would have been twenty-one. Or it could be the Dali invasion of 869 when she was twenty-five. Wu and Yue are proverbial opposing kingdoms. Fan Li and Wu Xu are famous characters of Yue and Wu. Washing Silk Temple, I believe, sits on Goddess Mountain overlooking the Changjiang (Yangzi, Long River) above the Three Gorges. Perhaps the temple was threatened by the approach of the mutinied troops.
