Accompanying Lu Chang back to Huzhou because my friends are relying on me to visit the stupa where Lu Yu is buried

Pouring rain, in front of the temple,
White duckweeds gather in the fresh breezes.
Of old, poems were full of friendship.
Now this fullness finds no place in poems.

Chanting alone, treasuring heartache,
Distant thoughts are trapped in misty landscapes.
On oak-covered slopes, a brick stupa,
Final resting place, noble darkness.

Abundant here, voices of bough and blossom,
As if all things intelligently spoke.
It's because of you, and all your verses, that
Make your way into and fill our poems.

Pursuing poetry, you once said that
Reality just poured in on you.
A river's tunes are hard to reproduce.
Dusty mound, covering you in vain.

I wish I could be with you, like wild ducks,
Colorful, flying in pairs to the east.
Many high and peaceful places there, in the east --
Fragrant graves, cold and lofty.

My hands gather up your sweet works,
Offerings you made of joy and harmony.
Wait for me. I have a few things to do to
Tidy up and I'll be done.

Not in this stupa on the banks of the Luo
But after death, the great togetherness.

废话

A few remarks. One of the nuances of 游, which usually means to "travel or wander" is "friendship." In the Tang mind, the two go together. Wild ducks, when written 鸳鸯, are symbols of fidelity and inseperableness. The Great Union or 大同 was, in later neo-confucian eras, a utopian vision of society. I believe that in the Tang era, it is the achievement of unity after death in Buddhist thought.
