Unable to linger in Ying, I accompany those going to Jiangnan
刚有下水船 白日留不得 老人独自归 苦泪满眼黑 |
Our boat's about to go downriver. Still broad daylight but I cannot stay. An old man once returned here alone, Bitter tears darkening his vision. |

Ying is one of the capital's of ancient Chu. The old man is the exiled king of Chu. In Tang times, he was a symbol of the unstable times, the displaced emperor's, the unending rebellions. A symbol of pathos among the cultured.
