For Lu Qian's Emissary
霜露再相换 游人犹未归 岁新月改色 客久线断衣 |
Difficulties still remain between us. Our emissaries still cannot return. With the new harvest, the moon will change the Color of the long exile's threadbare clothes. |
有鹤冰在翅 竟久力难飞 千家旧素沼 昨日生绿辉 |
There are cranes with ice upon their wings. Pushed to the limit, they can barely fly. For all people long effected by this stagnation, Yesterday a new light was born. |
春色若可借 为君步芳菲 |
If we can be worthy of this progress, These steps of yours will flourish. |

This is clearly an official diplomatic soft-pedalled poem. I have tried to show the actual content beneath the surface of flowery rhetoric. Still pretty flowery, isn't it? I can't tell, from the title, if Lu Qian is the emissary or the person who is behind the emissary. And I can't find a Lu Qian in the Tang Dynasty. There's one in the Water Margin, which is extremely not helpful...
