赤令风骨峭 语言清霜寒 不必用雄威 见者毛发攒 |
Chiling wind cuts to the bone. Its speech is clear, frosty, chill. It doesn't have to use heroic strength. It can just watch you hug your cloak about you. |
我有赤令心 未得赤令官 终朝衡门下 忍志将筑弹 |
I have a Chiling heart But not yet a Chiling job. All day, at the judgment gate, I think about playing my old lute. |
君从西省郎 正有东洛观 洛民萧条久 威恩悯抚难 |
You officials coming from the west Rightly want to gaze on Dongluo River. But Luo people have long been bleak. Kindness and sympathy don't grow here. |
苦竹声啸雪 夜斋闻千竿 诗人偶寄耳 听苦心多端 |
Reading at night, I hear a thousand stalks of Bitter bamboo hissing in the snow. Poets actually rely on their ears. Hearing so much bitterness overcomes my heart. |
多端落杯酒 酒中方得欢 隐士多饮酒 此言信难刊 |
Overcome, I set down my wine. Drunk, I'm suddenly filled with happiness. Recluse sages drank a lot of wine. Mmm, this poem may be hard to publish. |
取次令坊沽 举止务在宽 何必红烛娇 始言清宴阑 |
Taken in detail, this place is inferior. All in all, its spirit should be greater. Why must the red candles quiver as I Begin to speak by the feasts balustrade? |
丈夫莫矜庄 矜庄不中看 |
A strong man couldn't pity this place. I pity its ugilness. |

Wherever Chiling was in Henan, I can't find it now. But apart from it being a sorry place to be, Meng Jiao was apparently appointed there as an imperial official some time after he wrote this. We can add it to the list of where he served the empire.
