闲怨

A Leisurely Reproach

(一作闺怨)
(From a woman's point of view)

妾恨比斑竹
下盘烦冤根
有笋未出土
中已含泪痕

I hate this spotted bamboo.
It coils about the root of my resentment.
There are shoots, not yet emerging,
That bear the scars of my falling tears.

-- 孟郊

废话

This poem is inspired by the same story as Sister-Queens' Lament. It is also the second time Meng Jiao has written in a woman's voice. It shows that his empathy and sympathy extend beyond his own experience and the mores of his time.
