Poems of Xue Tao
Ten Poems of Leaving: Fish Leaves Pond
Leaping for joy in this pond all these years,
I've often waved my red tail to tangle fishing lines.
Now, for no reason, you've pulled up all the lotuses
And I can't wander these clear waves any more.
Even these simple early poems have me adding more than the average number of entries to my ongoing translation dictionary. It was never easy for women to become literate. But Xue Tao, like most of the other women poets I have translated, has a broad and natural vocabulary.
