It seems Xue Tao knows Omissioner Li well. But she is not close to him. He empathy and compassion lead her to say what will comfort him. This is a man who needs comfort. Omissioners were mid-level officials who oversaw imperial decrees, suggesting corrections and additions. They could influence imperial policy, if they were good at their job. Bai Juyi was an omissioner and was sometimes influential.
