Poems of Meng Jiao
Immortal teaching is the gate to life.
Immortal practice is the root of peace.
Grasp the mind as presumptuous thoughts appear,
Life's necessities are peacefully satisfied.
Its magic medicine roots out confusion.
Taking in reality, you reach the origin.
Naturally, you escape the world's net
And ride the phoenix to the immortal abode.
This poem comes from early in Meng Jiao's life. It is either a young man's poem or the poem of an older man who goes into Daoist reclusion. And we know that Meng Jiao never did the latter. He died, suddenly, going from one official appointment to the next.
