Poems of Bai Juyi
Seeing Yuan Zhen's Poem at Blue Bridge Station
Blue Bridge, spring snow, the day you went away.
Qin Hills, autumn wind, the day I did the same.
At every station when I dismount, the first thing I do
Is check the walls and pillars for a poem of yours.
Bai Juyi and Yuan Zhen were friends for decades. All over the empire, eventually, you would hear their poetry quoted and find their poems on walls. Sometimes they put them there themselves. Once, Yuan Zhen was banished to the far west and found one of Bai's poems written on an old wall. Both of them travelled a lot. So you probably could have read poems by both of them by looking around the empire's numerous relay stations.
